This semi-circular/almost hexagonal shawl is knit from the neckline down to the bottom hem. It features two narrow vertical bands of a floral lace pattern which run down the arms to the hem, with a matching floral lace pattern border, and an easy lace leaf motif for the remainder of the shawl. This project is suitable for a knitter with basic chart-reading skills and lace-knitting skills to include increases, decreases, knit, and purl techniques. The size of the shawl may be altered easily by changing needle sizes. The sample used only about 650 yards. While gauge is not crucial to this project, it may alter the amount of yarn needed to complete it.

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s gothic tale of an enchanted, poisonous garden and the beautiful Beatrice, daughter of Professor Rappaccini, has its origins in a traditional legend from India. The garden contains lush and beautiful flowering plants that give off a poisonous scent. His daughter, raised amongst the plants, has become immune to their poison, but she can also not live without breathing in their perfume. One of her father’s students falls in love with her, and believes he has found the antidote to allow her to escape the confines of the poisonous garden, but the antidote fails to work, and kills her instead.
