A simple knit/purl pattern creates flowing ribs interspersed with rectangles. Rectangulayer is worked cuff down with a heel flap and gusset. Gusset decreases are worked at the bottom of the foot, and a slipped-stitch twist runs along each side of the foot to provide a visual separation between the plain stitches of the gusset/sole and the pattern of the instep.

Level: Beginner

Skills required: Long-tail cast on, basic decreases, Kitchener stitch

Instruction type: Fully written and charted instructions

Construction: Top down, heel flap and gusset, grafted toe. The pattern is written generically so as to accommodate all small circumference techniques: dpns/ magic loop/ 2 circulars, both one at a time and two at a time.

Yarn: This pattern requires fingering weight (sock) yarn, about 330 yards (285 m) for the small size and about 420 yds (360 m) for the large.

Size: Small: 7”/18 cm circumference, unstretched
Large: 8 3/4”/22 cm circumference, unstretched
