Who doesn’t love a baby wearing a bonnet?

This pattern arose from a (mild) obsession with Downton Abbey and a desire to create an heirloom piece for a special baby. A new Royal baby cemented the intent and also inspired the name.

Knit in a cream DK weight yarn, it provides clear lace pattern definition whilst still being a fast knit. Pearl beads placed around the brim add a luxurious touch, which can be enhanced by choosing a 100% silk yarn.

50g of yarn will easily knit any one of the 3 sizes of this delicate bonnet. If you make the smallest size, you should also have enough yarn left over to make the matching mitt pattern included.

Materials:

  • 1 x 50g skein Debbie Bliss Silky DK or similar weight yarn (~100m per 50g)
  • 4mm/US6 straight and 32” long circular needle or DPNs
  • 8(9,10) size 6 seed beads (+6 for mitts) & 1mm steel hook for adding beads.
  • Sewing needle & matching thread, 18” of 3 or 5mm wide matching ribbon (+ 18” for mitts), yarn needle, 1 stitch marker.

You will need to be comfortable reading charted lace patterns and adding beads. To get the best results, you must get the gauge stated above. Substituting other yarns may give sizing changes.
