REVENGE of the Pup Patch Hat!

This is another simple mitered-square sack hat—probably the easiest and best of the designs on this theme that I’ve come up with.

The .PDF is written in detail for worsted-weight/aran yarn, and the main sample is shown in Noro Silk Garden, but this is one of those projects that can be knit at any gauge, using any midweight-ish yarn (dk to aran, possibly bulkier yarns as well) and the pattern as written. I’ll include information on sizing if you’re working with your own gauge.

The mitered square shaping has been refined to make an easy one-piece, flat-knit hat. Even the finishing is fairly straightforward, with no picked-up stitches or other antics—just a simple bindoff to bring it all together.

The cast-on method is a little unusual, but I’ll include my instructional .PDF attempting to explain it.

MATERIALS:

  • 100-180 yards of Noro Silk Garden, or your own handspun Noro-like yarn
  • 1 48”circular needle in US7/4.5mm, or size needed for gauge
  • (optional) removable stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

GAUGE:
Gauge for the hat shown is 16 sts and 28 rows over 4”/10cm in blocked garter stitch. However, this is an any-gauge hat, and the .PDF includes key measurements to allow you to knit this in bulkier or finer yarns.
