This pattern is designed to show off a special skein of variegated worsted weight yarn. Moms appreciate machine washable items so Malabrigo Rios answers the call with superwash merino in fabulous colorways.

This design incorporates changes in the direction and texture to allow the beautiful variegation of the yarn to shine as the focal point of the sweater.

Skills required beyond basic Knit, Purl, Knit 2 Together are Provisional Cast on, Kitchener, Garter Short Rows, Tulips Button Hole, and Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Sewn Bind off. Links to videos or other detailed instructions are provided for each of these techniques.

Yarn substitution caution: This pattern was designed for Rios which is listed as a Worsted Weight yarn, but I find it to be a closer to a Light Worsted. One of my pattern testers used Malabrigo Merino Worsted which I find to be a bit heavier. For her sweater in the smaller size she needed to use some yardage from a second skein. The pattern includes advice for how to reduce yardage a little to make this substitution work and still require just one skein, but please understand that the design was intended for Rios.
