This pattern is for a soft and squishy cowl with a texture that reminds me of riffles and runs in a stream - the lovely ebbs and flows of water running over pebbles and rocks followed by smooth runs. This is achieved by alternating DC clusters and DC shells.

The cowl is worked in the round, and instructions are included for joining each round in a way that makes the seam much less visible. Instructions are also included for foundation half double crochet (fhdc). The cowl can easily be resized by adding or subtracting from round 1 by a factor of 4.

I crochet rather loosely, so an M/N (9.00mm) hook worked for me to create a soft, flowy and flexible fabric, but if you crochet more tightly you may want to move up to the N/P (10.00mm) hook, as one of my testers did.

Gauge isn’t really important for this pattern, as the size is very forgiving.

I hope you enjoy the pattern! And if you’re on Instagram, please post photos of your finished creation with the hashtag #rifflesnandrunscowl and tag @theivykillerscrochet

Thank you so much to my testers batty4yarn and Debbist for helping me get the pattern ready for publication!
