NOTE FROM PATTERN: This ribbed waistband is meant to be a gentle gathering of the lower edge, not a cinched-in waist. Ribbing in this technique in mercerized cotton yarn is not particularly elastic, in that it does not have much “bounce back”. Off the hook, the ribbing will be deeper across the row (18 sc = 4”) and will be shrunken in circumference (22 rows = 4” row gauge). Once the ribbing is seamed, blocked and worn, it will compress in depth and stretch in waist circumference to give finished gauge. See tips in the Waistband section of the instructions for altering the waist fit if desired.
