This is a knit-a-long project, with options to help you use yarn that you purchase along the way, combined with yarn from stash. You can make the blanket as small or as large as you like.

Yarn Choices: Use any yarn that gives you the gauge below. We’ve used fingering weight (held double), dk and worsted (held single). We used 36 - 40g of yarn per square.

Finished Size: Each square measures approximately 9”. The size of your blanket will depend on the number of squares you complete and the width of your (optional) border. Sizes below are given without a border.
12 squares (4 x 3): 36” x 27”
16 squares (4 x 4): 36” x 36”

Needles and Notions:

  • Squares: 5.0 mm / US 8 knitting needles
  • Border: 5.0 mm / US 8 150cm (60”) circular needle
  • 1 locking stitch marker (plus 7 more markers if completing the border)
  • a tapestry needle

Gauge: isn’t critical for this project. Make a fabric that you feel happy with and if your gauge is a little different, it’ll just mean that your squares are slightly smaller or larger. It’s all good. The gauge on our sample is 17.5 sts & 39 rows (18.5 garter ridges) = 4 ins / 10 cm over garter stitch with two strands of fingering weight yarn held together, using 5.0mm knitting needles.
