Why design a Rubber Chicken hat?

1. Because it wasn’t there.
2. The world needed it!
3. So my husband would be highly visible while crossing the road.

My youngest nieces are fans of the My Little Pony (MLP) cartoon program. Last Halloween, my sister-in-law asked if I could make them MLP hoodies for costumes. I researched by watching all 90+ of the MLP series and became a fan myself. This design pays homage to the episode with Cheese Sandwich (voiced by Weird Al) and his rubber chicken, “Boneless”. Spoiler alert – Boneless is pretty important later in the season!

I tried to remain true to the basic silhouette of a real rubber chicken. My dear husband is the model pictured here and deserves homemade tiramisu for patiently wearing a rubber chicken hat.

This is my sixth chicken themed pattern and one might suspect that I am chicken obsessed. Not so, but we do have a flock of 5 elderly chickens. I consider them to be pets with benefits.

Basic skills needed:
Ribbing
Knitting Stockinette in the round
Decreasing and Increasing stitches *
Knitting with Double pointed needlessly
I cord
Simple sewing

• My usual increasing method is to lift the loop of the stitch below the next active stitch on the left needle, knit in that loop and then knit the active stitch. You can also knit twice in the same stitch.

Materials:
4 ounces main color (model is knit of Bright Yellow) Worsted Weight yarn and small amounts of red, black, white and orange
Size 8 5 mm needles – 16” circular and double pointed needles
6 Stitch Markers
Sewing thread and needles
Size E crochet hook
