Background

This hat was originally designed for the Harry Potter Knitting/Crochet House Cup. It’s a combination of 14 runes from the Elder Futhark, translated into a lace pattern. The old runes may be letters, but they are also symbols for things like creativity, prosperity, luck, and more. I incorporated these positive runes into the hat.

I decided to use the following runes in the hat: fehu, ansuz, kenaz, wunjo, jera, eihwaz, algiz, sowilo, tiwaz, berkano, ehwaz, laguz, dagaz and mannaz. I transcribed them into lace patterns, and incorporated those into the overall hat pattern.

Skills needed:

Basic lace knitting (slipping stitches, yo’s, increasing and decreasing). Suitable for an adventurous beginning lace knitter.
