This is a mitten in a traditional four-colour Estonian stranded pattern (two or three colours are used in each pattern round). The cuff is worked in ribbing (k 2 tbl, p 2). Specific instructions are not given for the thumb.

The sample shown in the book is a child’s mitten worked over 48 stitches, but the author suggests that since it is an 8 stitch repeat, casting on more stitches for an adult’s mitten is quite feasible. 80 stitches at a gauge of 9 or 10 stitches per inch (fingering yarn on size 2.5 mm needles) makes a woman’s size large or a man’s medium mitten and requires about 50 grams (200 metres) of the main colour and 25 grams (100 metres) of each of the three other colours.
