Babies! They’re everywhere! Wriggling, squawking, getting bananas smushed into their eyebrows. Boy howdy, they need constant washing up. Based on the 5-part symmetry of the lowly sand dollar, these are the perfect cloths with which to scrub up a hard-working, mashed split-pea-covered cutie pie.

And then, of course, there are the baby showers. Is it just me, or is there something a tad surreal about attending a party celebrating a monstrous, silent, kicking, tummy bulge? Which brings me to the mandatory gift. Sure, you can go out and spend eight-hundred bucks on the newest stroller made of aircraft-grade titanium, or whatever improbable present is on the baby gift registry. Or, you can show how much you truly care (while covering up what a cheapskate you are) by knitting a couple of these petite washcloths. Add some bubble bath and you’ve got yourself a swell baby gift! If your friends are particularly fertile, you might consider popping some champagne and knitting a stash of these. One ball of 3 ounce yarn makes 5 or 6, and a set of 3 is a nice gift.
