This beach cover-up is designed to take simple shapes and techniques and turn them into a drapey, versatile tunic. The easy-care linen gives a lovely bounce and flow to the knitted fabric. Don’t be intimidated by the crunchy yarn, as a quick spin in the washing machine once knit will soften it dramatically.

The cover-up itself invites improvisation. Change it up with a leather cord or a satin ribbon instead of the i-cord belt. Leave slits up the side when seaming for a flirty effect. Seam the neckline as high or as low as you want -- or leave a deep V in the front and a higher V in the back… until you turn it around to show off the plunging neckline in the back! Embellish the simple fabric with beading or embroidery.

Skill level:

Easy/Intermediate

Materials:

Yarn:
2 (2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3) cones of Euroflax Sportweight linen (shown in colourway Champagne)

Cones are 594 metres/650 yards per 227 grams/ ½ pound. Also available in skeins of 247 metres/270 yards per 100 grams/3.5 ounces. Cones are preferred, as it minimizes the number of times the yarn has to be joined. Linen tends to show joins. If you can’t find the cones, ensure you change yarns at the edges so that the joins and ends can be hidden in the seams.

Needles:
4.0 mm/US 6 straight or circular needles for working flat

Notions/Other Tools:

  • Lengths of smooth waste yarn for provisional cast-ons
  • darning needle for weaving in ends
  • cord of choice for waist tied (leather cord, ribbon, i-cord…) — approximately 3-4m length
