Several of my knitting friends really like the feather and fan stitch pattern. One day when we were discussing the versatility of this particular pattern someone pointed out that the only shape she had never seen was asymmetric. I love a challenge!

This asymmetric shawl beings with an I-cord loop cast on and gradually increases using the classic feather and fan stitch. The sides use a rolled stockinette stitch which mimics the I-cord but is much easier to work, and ends with an I-cord bind off. The design is both written and charted to allow for individual preferences. It consists of a 28 row repeating pattern that adds 18 stitches (one repeat of the feather and fan pattern) when completed. I used 500 yards of fingering weight to create my sample and had enough yarn to do 7 repeats plus another partial repeat so that is the way I wrote the pattern, but this design would look good in any weight yarn with as many repeats as your yardage will allow. My testers both needed slightly more than 500 yards to complete the pattern as written.
