FOR VERY EXPERIENCED KNITTERS

PLEASE NOTE:
This bookmark is knitted combining the techniques of traditional Sanquhar knitting with double knitting. Initials have been included as these are usually incorporated somewhere into the Sanquhar pattern. Sanquhar knitting is traditionally worked using black and white yarns.

The Sanquhar patterns used in this bookmark are:
Top pattern - Rose
Centre two patterns make up the Glendyne pattern
Bottom pattern – Drum

The pattern is both written AND charted to Row 59 (just before initials), after this the pattern is charted only, as it would be impossible to give instructions for every combination of initials.
The bookmark may be finished before the initials are added if you do not wish to work non-reversible double knitting.

Charts are included for both sides of the double knitting pattern and all 26 initials (both right way round and reversed)

Should you wish to familiarise yourself with this technique there are many videos and ‘How To’ guides available on the Internet.

As many of the pattern testers found this pattern may be knitted on larger needles such as Size 14 (2mm/US size 0) and using thicker yarn, the overall result will naturally be slightly larger.

Materials required: One pair size 18 (1.25 mm/US 4/0) knitting needles, 50 metres/55 yards size 20 crochet cotton in each of two strongly contrasting colours.

Finished size: 4¼-inches/10.5 cm high by 1¼-inches/3 cm wide

Gauge: 4 sts or 4 rows = ¼-inch /3 sts or 3 rows = 0.5 cm
Please note: due to the nature of double knitting stitches are wider than usual.

My thanks to all the people who have tested this bookmark
