I originally began this hat as an excuse to use some of that wonderful new Malabrigo Rios, but mostly I wanted to test and practice a tubular cast-on, a.k.a. Italian or German cast-on which I believe is a must for this type of hat or for anything ribbed.

I used 16” (US 5 & US 6) circular needles, but I recommend using straight needles for the cast-on row and ribbing section, joining in the round for the lace pattern and then sewing up the rib during finishing.
