This super-simple Santa hat uses just chain and single crochet stitches, so it’s a great first project for someone wanting to make a hat in the round. Because it’s constructed from the top down, it’s easy to make any size needed--just stop when it’s big enough to fit the head of a child, doll, pet--and start the trim. Gauge is not crucial. Once hat is desired diameter, stop increase rounds and work even until hat is desired height. Loops of chain stitches mimic fur trim, enhanced by the fuzzy nature of the yarn. Trim adds approximately 1” to final height. Top it all off with a festive pompom.

Made from the top down beginning with a magic loop. If preferred, begin by chaining 2 stitches and working the first 8 single crochet stitches into the second chain from the hook. Work hat in the round in a spiral fashion; do not join rounds.
