Good baby bootie pattern. You could just follow the diagrams and photos provided in this good pattern which has Italian notes- here’s a practice pair made out of leftover worsted with a big hook.
Worsted weight yarn made a slipper size for a child (the sole is 15 cm long).
Keep counting your stitches as you make each round- It’s easy to inadvertently add a stitch at the back of the foot when you begin the next row.
Use place markers as indicated.
And the tricky part is to make two slippers that end up the same size! (the 2nd one is often a little smaller- as you become more sure of the pattern, the stitches get tighter?- can avoid this by making 2 at the same time- make one row in one foot and then make the same row on the other foot.)
(for baby size with baby weight yarn- the white booties: Baby Luv Georga, Size 2.00mm crochet hook. The length of the sole is 9.5 cm)
To make the sole
Start in the middle of the sole with chain 15.
Round 1: 3 double crochet (dc) in 4th chain from the hook, continue by making one dc in each of the next 10 chain stitch spaces, then put 7dc in last chain st (stitch).
Now come back around the other side of the origional chain sts and put one dc in each of them (10), then 3dc in the last chain space, join with a slip st to the top of first dc of the 3dc that began this round. (34 stitches altogether now).
Round 2: chain 2, single crochet (sc) in the same stitch, now put 2 sc in the next stitch and 2 sc in the stitch after that, then put one sc in each if the next 5 stitches, now put one double crochet in each of the next 7 sts, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, 3 dc in the next st (which is exactly half way round the oval), now 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, dc in next 7 sts, sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in each of next 2 stitches, one sc in the space that is at the bottom of what now looks like the 1st sc of the round, join to the top of the 1st sc of the round. (Now you have 47 sts)
Round 3: chain 2, sc in the same space, sc in the next stitch, 2 sc in the next stitch, 1 sc in next stitch, 2 sc in next stitch, sc in each of next 8 stitches, dc in each of the next 6 sts, 2dc in each of next 4 sts, (the next st is the “exact middle” st of the round- at the toe end) 3 dc in this “exact middle of the top of the sole st” , now proceed around the left side of the sole to finish this round- 2 dc in each of the next 4 sts, dc in each of the next 6 sts, sc in each of the next 8 sts, 2 sc in the next st, sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st, sc in the next st, sc in the bottom of the first st of Round 2, slip st to join to the top of the first stitch. This completes the sole and it will lie flat. (62 stitches)
Next you start decreasing your stitches- the work will bend up and around to form the edges of the foot as you do this- the 3rd photo in Silvana’s pattern shows you how this is done by picking up two stitches and crocheting through them as if they are one:
Round 4- chain 2, sc into the back loops of each of the next 3 sts, insert hook into the back loops of the each of the 2 sts and single crochet these stitches together to make one stitch (decrease is made), sc into the back loops of the next 23 stitches, single crochet the next 2 sts together through the back loops of the previous round (decrease made), sc in the back loop of the next stitch (this is the exact middle stitch. Put in a marker in your work here. I just tie a small piece of another color yarn through the st and cut it off later), sc the back loops of the next 2 sts together (decrease made), sc in the back loops of the next 23 sts, sc the next 2 together, sc in each of the next 3 sts through the back loops of these sts, slip st to the first st of the round. (58 sts)
Round 5- ch 3 (This is the middle of the back of the foot. You’re starting the heel.), dc in each of the next 14 sts (place a marker in this stitch), dc in next 14 sts, dc in the next st (this is the exact middle st), dc in the next 14 sts (place a marker in the next st), dc in the st where you put the marker and in next 14 sts, slip st into the top of the ch 3 to complete the round. (the chain 3 which counts as 1 st at the beginning which is the end, plus 1 middle st on the other end plus the 14+14+14+14 stitches on the sides= 58 sts)
This is where I ran out of blue (at about 24 yards of yarn for one slipper).
Round 6- chain 3, dc in every dc all around.
Round 7- chain 2, sc in next 15 stitches, chain 12, skip the next 27 sts and sc into the next st (this is where you placed one of your markers- now your works looks like you made a little bridge from one side of the little shoe to the other side of the foot), sc in the next 14 sts, slip st into the top of the ch 2 to join the round. (the chain 3 counts as the 1st st + 15 + 12 chains across the front + the sc where you joined onto the other side of the foot + 14= 43 stitches which will form the leg. Leave the toe end where you placed the “exact middle” marker alone while you proceed with rows 8-12.)
Round 8- Now working on the 43 sts that form the leg part: ch 2, sc in next 15 sts, now put one sc in each of the chain 12 spaces (that made the little bridge across to the other side of the foot), sc in each of the next 15 sts (that are on the other side of the foot), join to the top of the ch 2.
This is where I ran out of yellow.
Round 9- chain 2, sc in every st around and join to the top of the ch 2. (ran out of orange)
Round 10-ch 3, dc in every st around, join to the top of the first st.
Round 11- ch 3, dc in every st around, join to the top of the first st.
Round 12- the decorative pie crust edging along the top of the leg shown in the white booties (you could simply put sc stitches in every st all around to finish the top of the leg.)
chain 1, dc in the next st, chain 1, slip st into the next st,- repeat this around the top of the leg.
Break yarn. Slip the yarn through the last st to secure it.
To finish the top of the foot
Note that you want to keep that exact middle point of the toe in sight so that you join the rows you are going to make in the instructions below in an even fashion on both sides of the toe.
Row 1: working in the origional chain 12 row of stitches that formed the bottom of the leg where the leg meets the top of the foot, begin the top of the foot by joining your yarn at the right side of your work with the toe pointing away from you- single crochet in each of the origional chain 12 sts., slip st to the edge of the foot. Turn your work so that now you have the toe facing towards you.
Row 2- chain 2, slip st into the edge of the foot, sc in next 11 sts, slip st to the edge of the foot, chain 2, turn your work so that the toe is pointing away from you, slip st to the edge of the foot.
Row 3- chain 2, slip st to the edge of the foot and sc in next 11 sts across, slip st to the edge of the foot.
Row 4-chain 2, slip st into the edge of the foot, turn your work so the toe is facing towards you and sc in the next 11 sts, slip st to the edge.
Row 5- You’re going to make a little fan in the middle of this row. Turn your work so the point of the toe is facing away from you. Now chain 2 and join to the edge of the foot with a slip stitch, slip stitch into the top of the first 4 stitches that you made in row 4, find the mid-point in this row and put 7 sc in that stitch to make the “fan” (yes it is crowded), slip st into the tops of each of the sts you made in row 4, slip st to the edge of the foot.
Row 6- What you want to do next is put the middle ch 3 of this row into the exact middle stitch of the toe and equally space three double crochet on either side of this st and the “fan”: chain 2, slip st to the left side of the foot, turn your work so the toe is facing you, chain 3, slip st into the side of the “fan”, turn your work so the toe is facing away from you, slip st into the next st, ch 3, slip st into the edge of the foot, slip st into the next 2 sts, ch 3, slip st into the middle of the fan, ch 3, slip st into the middle edge of the foot… finish the other chains in this way. (there are supposed to be 7 chains).
to make strap-
chain 4, dc in first chain, turn,
Row 1-chain 2, dc in next stitch,
repeat.
Fold down the leg part. Sew on a button. Sew on the strap. The button goes through one of the holes of the strap and adjusts to fit as needed.
