I love to knit hats with bulky weight yarn as gifts. They’re quick to make and an easy project to take on the go. Coincidentally, this has resulted in many balls of leftover yarn in my stash that I refuse to toss. Scraptacular was designed to use up those beautiful balls of hand-dyed yarn in a happy marriage of frugality and hat knitting. The slipped stitch pattern makes the colorways blend together in new and interesting ways while also making the hat doubly squishy and thick, ready to face the worst blizzards mother nature has to toss at you.

This hat is well suited to new knitters, looking to cast on their first hat, or for experienced knitters who want to churn out a quality hand-knit present.

Sizing: Pattern includes four sizes: Child (Teen, Adult Small, Adult Large) with an approximate head circumference of 18.5(20, 21.5, 23) inches.

If you are knitting this as a gift, the Adult Small will fit the heads of most women and the Adult Large will fit most men.

Recommended Yarn: Two skeins of Lattes & Llamas Beefcake Yarn (100 grams/ 106 yards) in contrasting colorways.

Adult Small sample is shown in ‘Punk Princess,’ ‘Honey Badger,’ and ‘Vintage Circus’ as Color A and ‘Prince Eric’s Eyes’ and ‘Raven’ as Color B. Child sample is shown in ‘Vintage Circus’ as Color A and ‘Raven’ as Color B.

For sizes Child(Teen, Adult Small, Adult Large) you will need approximately 40(50, 60, 70) grams / 42(53, 64, 75) yards of Color A and 22(32, 42, 52) grams / 23(34, 45, 56) yards of Color B.

This pattern was designed to use up many leftover balls of bulky weight yarn. You can use as many or as little colorways as you desire as long as there is always a Color A and a Color B. By the time I bound off the Adult Small sample hat, I had used three different colorways for Color A and two for Color B. When you reach the end of a ball, simply attach the next one using your favorite color-joining method. For this pattern, I used the Russian Join.
