This shawl is knit from the bottom up. You will knit the edging portion first back and forth from one end to another (from left to right in the finished photos) to form a long strip of garter lace. Once the edging is complete you will pick up stitches along the side of the lace and then you will knit the body from the bottom up decreasing stitches as you go until you reach the top centre of the shawl. It is a different method of knitting a shawl with an applied edging, and that appealed to me because your stitch count reduces as you progress leaving you with very few stitches to cast off at the end.

Instructions for the main body are in written format only; the edging is both written and charted.

What you will need:

• Yarn: 200g total yarn needed- 100g - 425m/464yds of fingering weight yarn for the main body (You can use 2 colours to stripe the body or a single colour for a solid version) and 100g – 425m/464yds of fingering weight yarn for the lace edging.
o Yarns used for this sample were The Wool Barn on the Smooth Sock Base (75/25 SW Merino/Nylon) in the Cerise, Deep Sea & Silver Colourways (425m/464yds – 100gm).

• Needles – 4mm (US 6) on Long Cable to accommodate all the stitches when you start the body.

• Notions – Stitch Markers for the lace edging and to mark decreases for the body of the shawl.

• Gauge – Gauge is really not too important with this shawl as long as you like the fabric you are getting. As a reference the sample shown had a gauge of 20sts / 4 inches after agressive blocking.

Finished Size of Shawl:

Approx. 200cm (79 in) on the longest edge & 55cm (22 in) deep.

Please note finished size will vary greatly depending on gauge, how many pattern repeats you knit, and how extensively the shawl is blocked. Total Yarn used for sample shown was approximately 85 grams (360m/394yds) for the Lace edging and 45 grams of each of the two colours (192m/210yds) for the Main Body & approximately 90 grams (384m/420yds) total if you are using a single colour.
