“…The waters you saw…, are the peoples, multitudes, nations and languages.” Rev. 17:15. Jesus said to His disciples, “You are the light of the World, a City set on a hill cannot be hidden.” Matthew 4:14
In the book, All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, a beautiful blue diamond plays an important role as its theme runs throughout the story. The name of the gem is Sea of Flames, which is described as “the color of tropical waters with flames of red in the center.” This description is the inspiration for this shawl. Using color, stitch patterns, beads, bias wedges and the theme of diamonds -- flames and water come into play. The shawl has taken on an additional meaning as the whole shawl is the waters representing the people of the world, and the beads represent the flames, ie., the lights of the world, the true believers.
The shawl is knit from the top down and is a ¾ circle with ever widening wedges that swirl giving the sense of the motion of water. Color variations in the yarn used also add to the sense of moving water. Beads, mostly inside of diamond shapes, are used to represent the flames. Stitch layout and edging are all original designs.
Yarn: Fingering or light fingering, 1100-1500 yds. Expression Fiber Arts Yak/Silk Fingering (500 yds/100 grams) in the Caledonia Blue color was used for the sample. 1180 yards were used in the one-color shawl. This yarn works up as a light fingering weight.
Testers used fingering weight, one size larger needles and two different colors -- one color for the body and a second color for the attached edging. This yields a slightly larger shawl.
Using different yarn weights and needle sizes will yield different finished measurements and will require different yardage. An appendix in the pattern gives examples of different yardage used in the testing process.
Beads: 602 size 6/0 seed or 5/0 triangle beads are used.
Finished measurements of the original version are 27” in vertical height with a 60” wingspan.
Difficulty Level: This pattern is suitable for intermediate knitters who can read charts and are familiar with simple lace stitches. Knit, purl, k2tog, centered double decrease, SSK and YO.
Lace patterns are charted only with written directions for making the shawl. No line-by-line written directions are included.
Please shop carefully as once purchased, the pattern is not refundable.
