I have a thing for minis, I love trying different colors and seeing how they look next to each other, how changing the order completely changes the project. For this reason I also love mini sets but have a hard time with the idea that you only knit one project with each set. After the cost, excitement, and spending all that time winding them up you should be able to use them more than once… enter the Second Chance Shawl!

Pattern Details
After the i-cord cast-on and set-up section, there are 25 pattern repeats followed by an i-cord bind-off. The pattern is written for two sizes, the shawl size is listed first, followed by the shlanket size in brackets.

Finished Dimensions
Two sizes available: smaller shawl size, 73in/185cm at neck edge by 33in/84cm deep and a larger, shalanket size, 85in/216cm at neck edge by 42in/107cm deep

Gauge
Gauge is not critical for this project but differences will affect yardage requirements and the finished size. Gauge on sample: 21 st by 32 rows = 4x4in/10x10cm in garter stitch after blocking.

Materials
Main Color: shawl: 280g/1227yds, shlanket: 397g/1735yds of fingering weight yarn.
C1-25: up to 25 fingering weight mini skein remnants - see below for yardages. Amounts are based on remnants of mini skeins that were originally at least 20g/87yd.
Shawl size sample knit with a leftover Autumn & Indigo 2019 Advent set with 3 skeins, 438yds each of Hookers Corner Squish Sock. All are a merino/nylon blend.
Shlanket size sample knit with a leftover Asylum Fibers 2020 Advent set with 4 skeins, 437yds each of Cascade Heritage. All are a merino/nylon blend.

Plus more as each of these colors will be used again for the tassels at the end.

Needles and Notions
US 4/3.5mm 40in/100cm or larger circular needle or size needed to attain gauge, two stitch markers, tapestry needle, cardboard to make tassels

Notes
10%+ added to all yardages. Always carry the unused MC loosely while working the C1-25 rows, it will wrap into the i-cord edge. If not noted, slip marker as necessary. Both sizes start off the same and diverge after the 10th row of the first pattern repeat or after there are 81 stitches on the needles. Easily adjust size of shawl further by using more or less colors, leading to fewer pattern repeats - simply skip to the bind-off section after last desired full repeat.

Full mini, First Chance version
In addition to your pattern for the First Chance Shawl which uses scraps of mini skeins leftover from past advents, I am including the First Chance version designed to be knit with 24 full, 20g minis and one full 100g skein. There is only one size, the shawl, which I will be knitting this December with my Hookers Corner 2021 advent set. I would love to knit along with everyone so please tag me in your posts! #firstchanceshawl and #secondchanceshawl and @charknit on Instagram
