I call it the serious hat because there is no ribbing. (Get it? No ribbing?? Sorry that was a terrible attempt at a knitting joke.)

Instead of ribbing, the edge is a folded hem created using a provisional cast on, folding the fabric up, and working the stitches in the first row together with those in the 21st row, as for a three-needle bind off (except you’re not binding off!).

A hat this serious needs a topper which is a bit more dignified than a conventional “pompom,” so it’s finished with a structured sphere, which is stuffed to hold its shape.
