Inspired by pebbles, rippled sand, sun, and sea, this textured, C-shaped shawl features airy, open-stitch rows alternating with denser shell and pillowy puff-stitch rows for comforting warmth.

The shawl is worked from the neckline outward, with internal increases at four points as well as increases at either end. The side sections are elongated to more easily drape or wrap over the shoulders.

The shawl is finished with either a simple wavy edging or an extended lacy edging for a slightly larger shawl. Both edgings include optional beads. The rows begin and end with shells to create the side edging, with the simple neck edging added last.

Partial stitch diagrams are included.

This pattern uses American crochet terminology.

Skill Level: Strong Intermediate.

Finished Sizes (after blocking):
Simple Wavy Edging (shown in color Aquatic Pearl) — 16 1/2” deep; 80 3/4” outer edge;
Lacy Edging (shown in color Imperial Topaz) — 17 1/2” deep; 90 3/4” outer edge.

Yarn:
Seismic Yarn Butter Fingering fingering-weight yarn (100% SW Extra Fine Merino; 437 yd 400 m / 100 g): 2 skeins (first photo — color Aquatic Pearl); OR

Seismic Yarn Butter Sock (85% SW Extra Fine Merino / 15% Nylon; 437 yd 400 m / 100 g): 2 skeins (second photo — color Imperial Topaz).
Note: the Lacy Edging version uses almost the entire 2 skeins; consider having a third skein on hand for this version.

Alternate yarn:
Seismic Yarn Butter Single fingering-weight yarn (100% Extra Fine SW Merino; 437 yd 400 m / 100 g).

Hook: Size E (3.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge; 1.00 mm-1.15 mm steel or beading hook for adding beads to the edging (optional).

Notions: Yarn needle; blocking pins (for swatch only); stitch markers (6); for optional beading on shawl edging: 60 size 3.5-4 mm cube seed beads with holes large enough to accommodate your choice of beading hook (I used Miyuki 3.5-3.7 mm cube seed beads).

Gauge (blocked): 6 shells = 4”; 9 rows in pattern = 4”.
