Pattern found on pages 34 & 36. Needle size should coordinate with yarn. Only one size is needed, but this is the suggested range. Adjustments to gauge can be made to accommodate a different circumference.

Pattern Descriptions from Vogue Knitting, Holiday 2008: “The ‘Seven-Rib Shell’ pattern naturally creates the curves at the lower edge, while the knit stitch between and at the top of each shell forms a sleek contour for the hat’s crown.”

Materials:

• About 3 oz. of medium-weight wool
• A 16” circular needle (or two 24” needles, or one 40” needle) of an appropriate size (approximately U.S. 5-8)

Gauge: 5 sts to 1”, plus or minus for a different circumference.

Size: Average adult - about 20”-21” in circumference (keep in mind that the ribbed motif pulls in slightly, so the blocked gauge may be slightly less than 5sts to 1”

Note: My sample has k1, p1 on the ‘fingers’ of the two lower shells and k1 tbl, p1 on the upper two shells. Twisting the knit titch may have produced a tidier result, but is less shell-like than the plain stitch. Knitter’s choice.“
