Pattern updated December 2012 to add instructions for knitting the scarf in the round so that the spirals are continuous (See pink sample in photos).

I charted the spiral for this months ago; Pat knitted the hat and scarf months ago. It was the middle of the summer so didn’t seem a very good time for taking pictures of a hat and scarf. We finally got round to it so here it is.

It is suitable for men or women.

The hat and scarf have the same very simple shadow design. When you look straight at them you only see stripes in two colours. When you look from an angle you see spiralling lines appearing and disappearing. As the person moves around it is Now you see it; now you don’t.

The crown of the hat can be worked in either of the main colours (or you could use another contrast). The back of the scarf is also worked plain. This makes a narrow but warm, double thickness scarf where the spirals disappear round the edge.

Mathematically, this is neither a spiral nor a helix. It is merely a series of diagonal lines giving the impression of spirals.
