Entrelac is French for “interlace” because the fabric has a basketweave texture formed by rows of small rectangles knitted onto each other. Most entrelac projects include triangles to fill in the edges, but this cowl uses only rectangles because I love the pointy “sharktooth” look and find it relaxing to just knit rectangles. Entrelac may seem confusing at first, but just follow the directions and it mysteriously works out.

This pattern uses gauge changes to change the size - smaller yarn will create a cowl suitable for a child or a neck-warmer style for adults, larger yarn will make a larger, more dramatic cowl for grown-ups.
