Inspired by my daughter and her love of unicorns, as well as our harsh Canadian winters, this hat is meant to keep little ears toasty warm and also transform an ordinary child into a magical unicorn. It looks adorable on a newborn baby, but the real fun is had by an older child whose very identity is magically altered into that of a beautiful unicorn (don’t worry, the horn is made of felted wool so it’s not pokey but will withstand any winter storm!

The cable section of this hat is knit flat and then seamed. Stitches are picked up and knit around the top part of the cable. The hat is then knit in the round from that point until completion. Earflaps are created by picking up stitches at the sides. The horn is knit in the round on 6.5 mm circular needles then felted, either by hand, or in the washing machine. After it has dried and been stuffed, a silver thread is stitched on around the outside (optional), and the horn, ears, and mane are sewn in place.
