Almost but not quite rolled into a ball, these hedgies are a bit shy but also interested in making new friends. About 6” long, they fit nicely in a hand and since the eyelash yarn creates a soft fabric, they may be loosely stuffed to make them especially soft and squishy.

Working with eyelash yarn can be difficult, but I tried to make it as stress free as possible: after the first round, you won’t need to count stitches while you work with the fuzzy yarn.

The pattern contains instructions for both European and African white-bellied (pygmy) hedgehogs. It is 7 pages long with many photographs illustrating the process, and it is written in English with US crochet terms. Stitches and techniques used:
starting with magic ring, chain, slip stitch, single crochet, single crochet increase, single crochet decrease, puff stitch, working in back loops only; and for African hedgies only, half double crochet, double crochet and treble crochet

Because of the eyelash yarn, this pattern is for experienced crocheters.

Finished items made from this pattern are yours to keep or gift away or sell, I only ask you to give me credit as designer in case you decide to sell them.

I don’t usually suggest specific yarn brands, but in this case the look of the hedgie will be greatly influenced by yarn choices.
For the smooth part, I suggest to use either DK or a lighter worsted weight yarn, such as Red Heart Soft, Caron Simply Soft, Bernat Satin or Patons Canadiana.
For the spiny part, an eyelash yarn with dense but not too long feathers is the best. If you are going for a realistic appearance, I recommend Ice Yarns Eyelash in White Black - its feathers are the perfect mottled color. You can order directly from their website (they deliver worldwide), or for 1-2 skeins find a local seller on Etsy.
I also had lovely results with a no-name, 55m/50g eyelash yarn from a German euro store, so if you can find something with similar yardage (and not too long lashes), it should work fine.
