When my friend’s grandson had his 1st birthday, I decided to design a simple and fun hat for his birthday gift and came up with the “Simple Surprise Jester Hat.” I loved it so much I’ve included instructions for adults, too. Why should babies and kids have all the fun?

The hat is simple to make and yes, it has a surprise!!! The contrasting band isn’t knitted at all … it’s the Tunisian Crochet Simple Stitch!

I have come up with a simple way to incorporate the Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) into a knitted piece. If you’re a knitter who doesn’t know how to do the TSS, don’t worry! I’ve included detailed instructions in the pattern.

The hat is knit in two pieces that are joined together. I’ve included instructions for seaming the top edge of the hat with a 3-needle bind off or the Kitchener stitch. The choice is yours!

I love to design and I love to teach, so as with all my designs, I’m ready and available to answer any questions you may have as you work up the hat.

I hope you will be excited about learning how to incorporate the very easy-to-do Tunisian Simple Stitch into your knit designs and perhaps learn something else that’s new to you, such as the 3-needle bind off and/or Kitchener stitch.

So please try my fabulous and fun “Simple Surprise Jester Hat with Tassels.”
