This hat is one element of an outfit that was originally designed, and short-listed, for the International Mohair Competition 19971. The patterns have been available, on our website, for a long time but are new to Ravelry.

The other two parts of the outfit are Simply Circles Cape and Simply Circles Skater Skirt. All three pieces can be made in any yarn and made to fit anyone. These are available as separate patterns and in an ebook.

The hats shown in the photos are very full with room to accommodate long hair but the pattern also has instructions for making a tighter-fitting hat. It can be worn as a beret or pulled down further on to the head.

The darker hat shown is ‘more than a circle’ so forms ripples in the hat. It is very easy to achieve this effect when you know how to make a perfect circle.

The ebook is mainly a book about the mathematics of knitting centre-out circles. Amongst other things, it explains how to make a circle that will lie completely flat whatever stitch, yarn and needles you decide to use. It includes all three patterns.

  1. One of the photos is a compilation of photographs taken in 1997.
In the previous year I was awarded second place in the competition with a child’s outfit.
