Use any standard gauge machine. This includes - Japanese 4.5 mm as well as European 5 mm spacing of the needles.

Real sock yarn is recommended. The 4 socks shown 2 per photo demonstrate why. These are all several years old and have been washed and worn many times. Sock yarn is blended and spun with durability in mind.

Use any #1 sock yarn. It is usually best to re-wind the yarn into cones or cakes before knitting it on the machine. Adjust the gauge so as to get 8 stitches per inch. It is usually quite easy to get this gauge but the stitch dial setting may vary quite a bit from yarn to yarn. Make notes of successful socks and settings to save time in the future. Gauge should be measured after washing and drying the swatch. Likely row gauges when 8 stitches per inch are achieved are 10, 11, rows/inch. All three are included in the chart. To allow the pattern to include so many sizes and 3 row gauges it is in a fill in the blank format. Charts of stitch and row counts are provided. When filling in the pattern blank, choose the foot row number from the column with your gauge. Toes may be grafted or seamed.
