It was mid February when I created Skat. I created this hexagon under the time of the sign Aquarius from the zodiac. The Aquarius has its own constellation and one of its stars is called “skat” I loved this name and the more I looked at it, the more it looked like a star to me.
The word Skat also means “darling” in Afrikaans and in Dutch which makes this name and design so much more special!
This pattern makes me so proud, it was amazing seeing it being born and how all the skats make such a wonderful constellation.
To make this even easier for you to make I have included some (unlisted) videos for each round and also for the finishing touches; I hope they help you crocheting along.
This pattern has been revised by the talented Dedri Uys from www.lookwhatimade.net; well known for her amazing Sophie’s Universe, in my opinion the most beautiful mandala out there! She has revised my pattern which makes this hexagon the most special pattern for me yet.
I am also proud to say that Sandra Eng , another talented crochet designer also known as Mobiusgirl in instagram who has an amazing feed of her gorgeous crochet work, has tried my pattern and her version is just jaw dropping!
Thank you both for your support and advice for this Skat motif, it has been quite a journey and I hope many people will enjoy working it, too!
You can use any material you want to make this blanket, I worked with acrylic yarn.
To make a blanket of 42 skats you need 950 grams of acrylic yarn
Each hexagon weighs 21 grams. I would say that you need half weight for each colour.
For my project I used 4 seasons marvel colours 8 ply
Main colours :
1008 Turquoise
Aqua 1067
Secondary colour:
Acid 2025
Crochet hook 4.5 mm
Scissors, tapestry needle

Size
The size will depend on the material and size hook you use.
I decided to make a loose blanket , for that matter I used a bigger hook than needed for the yarn 4.5 mm instead of 4.0 mm.
Each Skat hexagon measures 11cm per side after blocking.
The whole blanket made out of 42 skats , 6X7 measures 132cm X 120 cm
If using other size hook and material the result will vary.
