Sometimes the most common crochet stitch can be rejuvenated by working it in an uncommon way. The single crochet stitch, abbreviated sc, is easily mastered for the beginning crochet student. Single crochet worked back and forth weaves a tight fabric but is somewhat stiff. The stitches stacked one on top of the other creates a definite line pattern which may or may be what one desires. One of the ways single crochet can be manipulated is by the placement of the stitch. By skipping one stitch, and working two in the next, a textured flexible fabric can be created. To give the fabric more springiness, a large hook was used. The entire afghan, including the shell border, was made with the single crochet stitch.
