Skull Hat
Direct .pdf download: Skull Hat.
Simple two color bottom-up intarsia hat with a panel to cover the yarn floats on the back.
Uses provisional cast on. Charted design.
I originally published this pattern in March 2007 on my, now closed, blog. Here it is again, this time as a free download. Enjoy!
This is a cozy winter hat with an inner ear band that provides the warmth of a double layer and serves to cover the floats being the skull motif. The inner band is knit at a slightly firmer gauge for improved wind resistance. Measure gauge on larger needles.
The pattern is written for a 22” (adult) size, but can be easily sized down using smaller needles and a tighter gauge. For a child’s sized hat, cast on 84 stitches and remove one skull motif repeat. For adults, or those with large skulls, add length in the main colour above the colour work section; 5 rows add about 1.25”.
Any worsted weight yarn can be used. It is possible to knit two complete hats using two balls of yarn by reversing the main and contrast colours for the second hat.
Errata: row 11 was missing from the chart and has been added back.
