This pattern was created to introduce knitters to double knitting – or what is also referred to as two sided knitting. The technique described will result in a tube of knitting which is similar to knitting in the round. The most noticeable difference is that the gauge is significantly looser – fewer stitches per inch. This is because both layers are mounted on one needle creating quite a bit of space between stitches.

This pattern will describe how to use a Provisional Cast-On to set up for double knitting. This is certainly not the only way, nor necessarily the best way. However, it is useful in helping to keep track of your stitches. There are many other ways to cast on; for a good reference book, check out The Principles of Knitting by June Hemmons Hiatt, pgs. 310 – 312. Or, if you prefer an internet reference, search for a YouTube video showing the Tubular Cast-On; this is a popular way to begin double knitting.
