Beads as colorwork! That is what is unique about this hat. Instead of using beads to add bling to a lace pattern, the beads are meant to replicate the beautiful gradient yarns that we all love. Larger beads are used for this reason. Using beads for the colorwork actually frees you from the confines of other types of color knitting. Unlike stranded knitting, you can use more than one color in a row. And it isn’t intarsia!

Errata: The bead count for the medium colored beads (size medium hat ribbing) was incorrect and should read 102. An update to the pattern has been sent out.

Techniques: The design is charted only. Knitting, purling, adding beads. You will need to change to dpns to complete the crown shaping.

Beads Size 6 in three colors are added in two ways: the ribbing is knit with beads that you string onto the yarn prior to knitting. The snowflake beads are added using a crochet hook of size 1.25-1.4 mm (or whatever method, hook size works for you). Links to an on-line bead source are included for the beads used in the sample hats.

Sizes
Extra Small XS (16 in.), Small S (17 in.), Medium M (18 in.), Large L (19 ¼ in.), Extra Large XL (20 ¼ in.)

Yarn Needed: 1 (1, 1, 1, 2) skeins

These are approximate finished sizes, meant to be worn with 1-3 inches of negative ease. The hat tends to fit looser, but seems to look good on everyone. Five sizes are included so you can adjust to your own yarn, gauge, and style preferences. If it seems too big, either go down a size or use fingering weight yarn.

There are two colorways shown for the hat:

  • “Snowfall Ice Blue” (two blues and silver beads on Fresco Parchment)
  • “A Snowfall’s Chance in Hell” (red, orange, and gold beads on Swans Island Graphite)

The sample hats each took almost the entire skein. You may need an additional skein for the largest size. If you plan on making the matching Snowfall Mitts, purchase an extra skein.

Optional fur poms are shown in some photos. Other suggested finishes are included in the pattern.

I apologize in advance for the fact that knitting this pattern is “stunningly addictive.” Or so says one of my test knitters.

When you purchase both the Snowfall Hat and Snowfall Mitts patterns, you will receive them for the discounted price of $10.00. AND the Mini Hat Pattern is included for F R E E with the purchase of the Snowfall Hat pattern -- DO NOT ADD the mini hat pattern to your cart!!
