Spreading some knitty joy during this difficult festive season -- all Katie Flora Knits patterns are on sale for $2 for one week, until midnight Friday 11th December. Stay well, and keep knitting. <3

Graceful and comforting, Softwood is light enough for summer wear over the shoulders, but substantial enough to keep the chill away when wandering beneath towering fir canopies. Knit from the top down to a generously-sized triangle, Softwood is comprised of meditative, easy-to-memorise fir-inspired lace motifs. Dream of far-flung forests while knitting this soft, feminine shawl, and celebrate your connection to the natural world every time you wear its lacy wingspan.

Pattern includes both written and charted directions.

Difficulty Level

Adventurous Beginner – Intermediate.

Techniques Used

  • Knit & purl
  • Increasing stitch (YO) and decreasing stitches (k2tog; SSK; sl1-k2tog-psso; s2-k1-psso)
  • Right side-only lace (both written and charted directions included)
  • Stretchy bind-off

Yarn

Bendigo Woollen Mills Athena 4ply (85% wool, 10% bamboo, 5% silk; 874yds/799m per 200g ball). This yarn is now discontinued -- substitute any lace to fingering-weight yarn blending wool with at least 15% bamboo or silk. If using pure wool, such as Bendigo Woollen Mills Luxury 4ply, ensure your gauge is loose enough to allow a lot of drape.

Gauge

Although gauge is not crucial in ensuring a good outcome with Softwood, the sample was knit to approximately 20st/4 inches in stockinette stitch after heavy blocking, on 3.25mm/US 3 needles. Always swatch to check if you like the fabric your gauge produces!

Needles

3.25mm/US 3 100cm/40” circular needle (for carrying large amount of stitches)

OR size appropriate to reach preferred gauge.

Notions

  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle
  • Large, pinnable surface for blocking

Finished Measurements

Wingspan (firmly blocked): 173cm/68”
Depth at tip: 81cm/32”
