The simple shape of this cardigan allows us to concentrate on lace knitting. The back and sleeves are stockinette, the fronts are lace.
YARN, GAUGE, SIZE & MACHINE
A Japanese machine with a lace carriage is ideal for this project. The shape may be knitted on a machine without a lace carriage or on a Passap but it is necessary to hand manipulate the lace. A
suggested hand manipulated pattern is given later in the pattern. Using a stitch size of 6-7 it gets a gauge of 7 stitches/10 rows per inch On Japanese and Passap machines. 3 sizes, 40, 48, 54 bust & hip(51 for Passap) . Select a size that is at least 10” larger than the actual bust or hip measurement, whichever is larger, to get the
draped look. All sizes are 27” long in the standard and 28” in the bulky version as given but the length is easily adjusted by adding or subtracting rows after the hem and before the armhole markers. Armhole depth is 910, 11”.Sleeve length as given is 10” but it may be lengthened or shortened easily by changing the row count. Due to the width of the back, the sleeves are 3/4 length although only 10”
long. The largest size on Japanese machines will not work for Passaps as they have fewer needles. A Passap-only largest size is given in brackets like these ( ). Where there is not a number in such brackets, use the same number as for the Japanese largest size. An alternate gauge for mid-gauge and bulky machines is given in brackets like these { }. This version uses worsted weight yarn at a gauge of about 4 stitches/6 rows per inch and lace must be hand manipulated as described later in the pattern.
