UPDATES!
The bonus content version of the design is ready!

  • The new blue-grey sample is knit from Cascade Yarns Heritage Wave in Plume (501) and Cascade Yarns Heritage Solids in…Gray. This was the result of running out of yarn, and you’ll need about 2 skeins of MC and 1 (well, .6 really) skein of CC to knit the sample.
  • This shawl can be knit as anything from a mini-shawl to the full-sized sample in blue.
  • Row gauge has been slightly adjusted for fingering-weight yarn. Pattern purchase includes 2 .PDFs, and the new bonus-content version is the one with the blue sample main photo.
  • If you’ve purchased this pattern previously, when it was first released, please do download the new version as well! I will be sending out an update link, but wanted to note that any purchase means you get this version, too. Bonus content continues from the end of the previous .PDF, so you can continue with the new .PDF even if you started from the old one.

Hang in there, and enjoy!

Spokey is a half-circle pi shawl designed around yarns with long self-striping patterns. It looks good in solid colors, too, and my current favorite is in handspun natural grey wool/unbleached linen, so this design will potentially fit many aesthetics/personal styles.

Robust lace motifs complement sections of calm, easy—yet visually interesting—ribbing, for a well-balanced project.

The Badlands-colored shawl is in Noro Yarns Taiyo Sock (colorway unknown) and Malabrigo Rastita (colorway Glitter).

The additional sample is in handspun natural wool/linen. I didn’t have enough yarn to complete the pattern as written, but I almost prefer this version, which stops about 2/3 of the way through the second ribbing repeat. So there’s some flexibility there, as well.

The final image now shows the original shawl, knit from yarn spun from Malabrigo Yarn Nube.

Gauge:
Gauge is 18 sts and 24 rows in blocked ribbing. Please be sure to check your gauge.

Measurements:
The current version is shown as a sportweight knit! It measures about 49.5”/1.26m across the wingspan.

Materials:

  • 600 yds heavy fingering/sportweight yarn
  • 1 40” circular needle in US6/4.0mm, or size needed for gauge
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Techniques:
knit, purl, YO, increases—it’s all pretty basic for this one! Needle/stitch management as the length of the row increases may be the trickiest aspect of this shawl for a beginner.
