This afghan or wall-hanging can be knitted using any yarn and needles. The yarn chosen will change the finished size but it can be made in a large range of sizes, whatever yarn you choose. You can even make it very small, as a cushion or pillow.

It needs a minimum of four colours and a maximum of twenty-one so it is ideal for using stash yarns.

The design represents a discovery that can be found in many maths textbooks - it is the smallest number of different size squares that a larger square can be split into.

The first version of Square Deal was in shades of blue and was bought for the Mathematics Collection of the Science Museum, London. The other photo shows the purple version that came later.

A colouring sheet is included so that you can try out your own colourways before you begin.

The squares are knitted separately and stitched together. The booklet contains information for how to make them larger or smaller whilst retaining the correct proportions.
