Inspired by the rich, saturated colours of Noro Silk Garden solids, this mid-calf length, slightly A-line skirt will take you through the fall and winter months looking stylish and feeling warm and cosy. The front and back pieces are knit flat from the picot hem up and the sides are seamed while the top stitches are held on waste yarn. The seams give added support to the structure of the skirt, minimizing stretch and bagging. The stitches are then transferred to a circular needle and the waistband is knit in the round. Hip to waist shaping is accomplished by reducing needle sizes every inch or so. This provides a denser fabric, giving more strength to the upper portion of the skirt.
Although the pattern is written in one size it is easily adaptable to make larger or smaller, longer or shorter. The 36” finished waist will fit 30” to 36” simply by adjusting the length of the elastic. I made the skirt for myself with 3” of ease at the hips and cut the elastic to 32”. A general rule of thumb for increasing or decreasing the size would be to add or subtract 4-5 stitches to the original cast on.
I highly recommend the yarn I used as it holds its shape well. Feel free to get creative. It would also be lovely in different tones of one colour or an “ombré” look going from light to dark.
