Starry, Starry Night is my first foray into shawl designing, and I hope it will be something you will enjoy making.

I wanted to create a painting-like night scene with flowers and stars for the shawl.

It is a modular design, made using various polygons of the African Flower crochet pattern. The motifs are joined using a Join-As-You-Go technique (JAYG), making this a seamless project. Although I have tried to be exhaustive in my explanations, this is still an ADVANCED pattern. Not to say that intermediate crocheters wouldn’t be able to make this shawl - but it will take patience and care.

I have filmed several accompanying videos for this pattern, in order to help you understand the JAYG process, as well as to show you a few tips on managing yarn ends.

Please be sure to read through the pattern a few times, and watch all of the videos, to gain a good overview, before you start this project. There is a lot of information here, and going through it several times, may answer many questions you may have.

The shawl will need to be blocked at the end, as most shawls are. This is a large shawl. However, depending on the yarn you chose to use, you could end up with a very different sized shawl to the one I am making. Using the yarn I used, and the recommended hook, will give you a shawl approximately 2.25m (+/-88”) in size, point to point horizontally, and approximately 65cm (+/- 25.5”) deep in the middle, after blocking.

My specific shawl calls for many different colors of yarn. However, you can choose whatever colors you prefer, and make a totally different looking shawl. The shawl is modular and the construction method remains the same.

This is an advanced project.

The making of the motifs is easy and once you see the videos on the JAYG technique, you will likely find that easy too. However, I have classified it as advanced, given the exact color placements I made, and the overall construction being a little more complex than the usual kind of project.
With this in mind, I have chosen to use illustrations, rather than my usual photographs. My hope is that this will make the instructions clearer and easier to follow. The key is to take the project and break it into smaller sections, as I have done. Before proceeding to the next step, please take time to double check your work up to that point.

There are a total of 269 motifs for this shawl.
