Of unknown origin, first spotted in the wild here. Stash monsters are magical creatures that live in yarn stashes, consuming that yarn you can’t for the life of you work out why you bought, and “producing” the yarn you wish you had. Or at least I wish they were.

A pattern preview is available This contains all the notes, abbreviations and other useful information plus a random selection of rows from the body/head section.

This is the knit version of the stash monster, their cousins the crochet version can be found here.

Relations have been somewhat frayed between the cousins since a friendly yarn eating competition 2 years ago. The knits complained that the crochets had “stitched them up” and it all went downhill from there.

60m (66 yds) - 100m (109 yds) of yarn depending on your yarn weight - thicker weights will use more. Fingering up to Aran weights have been tested.

A DK monster is 12 cm (6 inches) tall

Optional Materials:
Felt, buttons, beads or other contrasting yarns to create the eyes and mouth

DPNs, 2 circulars or a long circular for magic loop at least one size smaller than recommended for your yarn.
Darning needle for sewing.
Regular sewing needle if you are going to sew felt to the monster.

Not important, but a good tight fabric is required so the stuffing doesn’t leak out.

• Stash monsters are not children’s toys, as the ears and limbs could constitute choking hazards for babies or small children.
• Judy’s magic cast-on was recommended for the body during testing. If you aren’t familiar with it, the Knitty tutorial is here
• Not sure what your stash monster should look like? The pattern includes an outline to let you try out different colour combinations and faces.
