My job changed recently, and I found out that I’m going to be spending a lot of time in the field wearing steel toe boots. Fortunately, I found a pair that doesn’t look so clunky. They’re kinda hiking boot looking, which is a nice change. The downside is I don’t want to wear my handknit merino and bamboo socks inside those boots. They would get all worn out ahead of their time.

So, I was on the hunt for a seriously sturdy sock yarn. I found the Patons Kroy Socks yarn at Michaels. It’s 25% nylon and 75% superwash wool. It’s a little thicker than most sock yarns, which is good for boot socks. That’s a nice, sturdy yarn and I believe it will stand up to the rigors of work boots for a nice, long time.

The second problem is not wanting boring stockinette socks. I wanted a nice pattern that wasn’t too lacy and wasn’t too bumpy. I found this slip stitch pattern on a poncho I saw in a store and decided to adapt it to working in the round. It makes the socks a little more enjoyable to knit and isn’t uncomfortable in your boots.
