As 2021 sees us still living in uncertain times I have temporarily set this up as a free pattern so there is at least one positive thing in these troubling times. Happy knitting.

The pattern includes 2 versions of the shawlette and each version uses 2 x 100g skeins of fingering weight/ 4ply yarn ( 1 each of 2 different colours for the striped version or 2 of the same colour for the variegated version).

I like to think of myself as a relatively confident person but I have recently discovered that nobody has more confidence in my abilities and ideas than my children do! A couple of winters ago my eldest asked me to design a shawl for her to wear in the cold weather. She wore it constantly all that winter and every time we bumped in to someone (whether we knew them or not) she would show off her shawl and tell everyone that I made it and insist I was the most talented mummy in the whole world. Whilst I certainly wouldn’t go that far I did agree that one day I would write the pattern up so that other people could make it as well.

I’ve tweaked the original design slightly to offer instructions for 2 different shawlettes - a striped version and a variegated version but, as my eldest would no doubt tell you, it looks equally beautiful worked in a single solid colour. The striped version features different numbers of stripes on each side but if you prefer symmetry you will have enough of the contrast yarn to make an equal number of stripes. I added tassels to the variegated version because tassels are fun but these are entirely optional and up to your own individual tastes. The elongated crescent shape makes it easy to wear and more importantly a shawlette that stays in place once you’ve put it on. The use of simple, basic stitches ensures that it is an easy project to complete and allows the yarn you choose to show itself off to its full potential, the modular construction and decorative border on the other hand should add enough variety to keep it interesting.
