A technique for straight edged stripes in crochet.

I didn’t make this up, but I do wish I had learned about it 20 years earlier than I did. So this is my way of letting people know about it.

Simply add a row of slip stitches on the right side in the new colour. Then work the next row only in the top loop of the previous row. Now continue on as usual.

I say “top loop”, because if you’re working flat, back and forth, the top loop is the front loop. But if you’re working in the round, always from the right side, the top loop is the back loop.

Worked flat (back and forth):

  • end after a wrong side row, change colour as usual, (one loop of new colour on hook) turn.
  • (right side facing) including the very first/turning stitch, slip stitch across the row, working in the top (front) loop only of the previous row.
  • (wrong side facing) work the next row in the top (front) loop only.

Worked in-the-round: (always from the right side)

  • end a round, change colour as usual, (one loop of new colour on hook).
  • slip stitch across the round, working in the top (back) loop only of the previous row.
  • work the next round in the top (back) loop only.
