This shawl is inspired by the everchanging intertidal coastline of southeast New Brunswick, my cherished summertime destination. The appearance of the shoreline transforms daily with the tides, which wash seaweed in, deposit it and other debris onto the beach as “strandlines” (“wrack lines”), and then wash it out again with the next higher tide. The repeating cycles of strandline formations, tidal channels carved into the sand, and colourful stones and seashells strewn over the beach are the motifs carried through the repeating stripes, colours, and stitch patterns of this design.

Construction
The shape of this asymmetrical shawl is a right-angled triangle, worked sideways from the tip with increases on every RS row along the bias edge. Three stitch patterns make up the repeating stripe pattern, which I refer to as “seaweed” (col A), “tidal channels” (col B), and “seashells” (col C). A unique feature of all three is that they look equally beautiful from either side, making the shawl reversible. See if you can spot the difference between the right and wrong sides in the photos! The pattern includes complete row-by-row written instructions with stitch counts, together with accompanying charts for knitters who prefer working from charts.

Yarn
This pattern is designed for fingering-weight wool or wool blend yarns. For effective contrast, select single-ply solid or tonal shades for cols A and B and a speckled or variegated plied yarn for col C.

The sample shawl uses:
2 skeins (col A) – 1 ply Superwash Merino Fingering by Lichen and Lace, 100% superwash merino wool (100 g/3.53 oz, 366 m/400 yds), col sea grass (hand-dyed).
1 skein (col B) – Tosh Merino Light by Madelinetosh, 100% superwash merino wool (100 g/3.53 oz, 384 m/420 yds), col harvest (hand-dyed).
1 skein (col C) – Twist Sock by Hedgehog Fibres, 80% Blue Faced Leicester wool, 20% nylon (100 g/3.53 oz, 399 m/219 yds), col poppy (hand-dyed).

Quantity
Col A - 154 g / 5.4 oz; 564 m / 616 yds
Col B - 66 g / 2.3 oz; 253 m / 277 yds
Col C – 33 g / 1.2 oz; 132 m / 72 yds
Weight and yardage are based on the sample shawl (+10% allowance).

Needles & Notions
4 mm (US 6) needles (36 cm/14 in) and/or
4 mm (US 6) circ needle (80 cm/32 in), used for flat knitting
Tapestry needle (to weave in ends)
Blocking mats and pins

Gauge
26 sts x 32 rows to 10 cm/4 in in st st using a 4 mm (US 6) needle (blocked).

Achieving the recommended blocked gauge will produce a shawl of similar size and drape as the sample shawl, as well as meet the yardage. Small differences in blocked gauge will still produce a beautiful finished object!

Finished Dimensions (blocked)
Diagonal (bias) - 178 cm/70 in
Length - 147.5 cm/58 in
Width - 99 cm/39 in
The shawl’s length is adjustable by adding or subtracting stripes, balancing stitch and colour sequences as desired.
One repeat section patt 1, 2, 1, 3 = 114 rows measures approximately 35.5 cm/14 in. Patts 1 (2, 3) measure 10 (13, 5) cm / 4 (5, 2) in, respectively.
