To create an accurate gauge you would have to cast on enough stitches to knit the gauge in the round. Since the möbius is not a fitted garment where gauge is crucial, I would like to offer the following suggestion for needle size and to just knit the möbius without doing a gauge swatch. If you normally knit to gauge when following patterns, then use the size recommended. If you knit looser and usually have to go down a couple sizes, then try a U.S. size 4. If you typically knit tight and have to use a larger needle then try a size 7 or 8.
