Mine were made using Bernat Handicrafter (or Lily Sugar and Cream in the US) so the color options are endless. You could also change color every round to use up scraps of cotton from other projects. 4 balls (1.75 oz, 50 g, 80 yds, 73 m) will make 3 place mats with some left over.
